Farming status, plans, and practices

I would like to have a diversified farming business rooted in organic practices and permaculture principles. I don’t have much experience with biodynamic farming, but would like to explore this method.

The following plans will vary based on the specific situation:

To start, after assessing the land, I’d like to plan a permaculture food forest including fruit trees (I already have several potted fruit trees to use), berry bushes, herbs, and other perennials.

During the time it takes to establish the food forest, I will grow and sell fast-growing annuals like micro greens, radishes, lettuces, garlic, potatoes, peas, etc. I’d also like to grow mushrooms.

If I am able to keep livestock, I’ll start with chickens or quail, then the other, then add ducks. I’ll collect eggs from them to sell. I’ll also hatch and sell chicks. I would consider expanding to meat birds after some time. If there is a place for sheep, I’d like to add a few dairy sheep.

I’ll add bees once I’m ready to take on this project or have an outside beekeeper keep hives on the property.

If I’m able to get a food processing permit, I’ll also sell some food products made with the produce grown in order to increase profit margins. I have a background in herbalism, so growing, drying and selling herbal teas would be at the top of this list along with herbal skincare products.

In the winter, I’ll tap trees to make syrup and continue to grow and sell micro greens.

I’d also like to host community events, workshops, and classes including partnering with other local small businesses to increase brand awareness, educate the community about the importance of sustainable agriculture, and empower people to live healthier and more connected lives.

Farmland Needs

Infrastructure required

Housing is required for myself. My boyfriend and small dog will stay in the home too, but we will likely also keep our Brooklyn apartment, so my boyfriend will not be there all the time.

Desired Tenure

Tenure options desired

  • For Sale
  • Business Partnership
  • Farm Management
  • Cooperative Model
  • Other Tenure Agreement

I am looking for a partnership, farm management position, or cooperative model. I would also be interested in purchasing land (which I would likely need to take out a loan for).

Estimated price range for a lease or a purchase of a farm property

Depends on the property. If it it only land, under $150,000. If there is a nice house on the land, up to $800,000.
