Farming status, plans, and practices

My sister, fiancé, mother, and uncle and I take care of a little over an acre in Milford, OH where we raise kunekune hogs, laying and meat birds, bees, and have a huge garden as well as berries and fruit trees. My fiancé grew up on a large ranch in Kansas and left his farm in Kansas to move to Ohio.  We are looking to sell our property here and expand our operation. We have a podcast and currently do how-to videos on everything from home projects such as remodeling and electric to bread making, canning, dehydrating, herbs, vegetables, and how to raise and butcher pigs and chickens. My fiancé is a man's man who can build or fix just about anything. He is also an avid woodworker with a saw mill. We host classes on beekeeping, soap making, and animal husbandry. We are looking to relocate to New York to expand upon our operation to full-time rotational grazing for sheep, cattle, and possibly goats. Not only is New York less expensive for regenerative ranching, but my sister is in a serious relationship with an engineer in New York who wants to start farming as well. We are hoping to create a large regenerative ranch and co-op that would include classes for adults as well as children, as well as a dairy herd share. We are very familiar with the farming practices of Joel Salatin, and have been to his farm and interviewed him on several occasions in person. We are excited to start the next half of our journey in farming and animal husbandry and just expand and build out what we are already successfully doing.

Farm Experience & Education

  • Farm owner
  • Farmer training or workshop
  • On farm work experience

We have Amish friends who have taught us a lot about land stewardship and how to run a herd share, butcher, and crop rotation. We are all well read and help other young farmers with their endeavors such as sheep raising or turkey butchering. Matt, my fiance grew up on a summer calf operation from the time he was 8 yrs old until college. He has a business degree from Whitita State.

My sister and I run a pet care business and care for all animals, even horses and dairy cows. We are all well read and Youtube is quite the teacher for all things farming and homesteading. We have many homesteading family friends and we all share tips and tricks.

We have been raising pigs since 2015 and breeding kune kunes since 2016. We also have been keeping bees for the same amount of time. We keep laying hens and raise out meat birds and host butchering classes for our pigs and chickens

Marketing Method

Right now we are selling our farm products direct to consumer at a weekly market. We could sell a lot more meat but just don't have it to sell. We have previously sold our vegetables and eggs at an on farm farmstand and that was quite successful.
